VICKY ARMSTRONG

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner

As a nurse practitioner for the last seventeen years, and as an RN working in hospitals and public health prior to that, I’ve treated and supported patients experiencing everything from heart disease and diabetes to hormone imbalances and exposure to mold.  For the last five years I’ve taken my foundation in traditional medicine and incorporated functional medicine practices which integrate nutrition and supporting immune function to help patients truly feel better.  Now, I can offer more than just pills or prescriptions to manage symptoms of underlying issues.

I developed a personal interest in Integrative Medicine when I researched and successfully treated my aging dogs with non-pharmaceutical remedies.  I've continued my pursuit of cutting-edge knowledge and am currently a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), working towards certification. IFM’s philosophy is centered on identifying the root cause of symptoms, while promoting health and wellness from the patient’s immune system and other natural sources.

Before coming to integrative healthcare, my clinical experience included over twelve years of work in traditional medical environments, including Cardiology (5+ years), Family Practice/Internal Medicine/Emergency Room (3+ years) and Hospital Medicine (4+ years).  I grew frustrated with the constraints of traditional medicine, seeing patients on a merry-go-round of care, never having the source of their symptoms fully investigated or addressed.

I brought my experience and knowledge to the functional and integrative medicine arena five years ago.  I manage acute illnesses (upper respiratory illness, urinary tract infections, COVID) as well as chronic conditions (fatigue, hormones, hypertension, diabetes, thyroid).  My current practice also includes balancing adrenal fatigue and thyroid function as well as bioidentical hormone replacement therapies for both men and women.  My goal is to identify and treat underlying causes versus just symptoms of illness and I seek to empower patients with knowledge and information so they can achieve optimal health and well-being.

I earned my Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of South Alabama and obtained Nurse Practitioner certification through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (now the American Association of Nurse Practitioners) in 2004.  When I'm not studying or working, I enjoy being outside, bicycling, hiking, walking, playing pickleball and hanging out with my dogs.
